Stewart, Jan. 30

Hey, just wanted to update that Sugar Lab couldn't interview with me, however; she sent me some high resolution photographs we could use as graphics and a press release to get some information about how they got start, the concept and etc.

I still have my interview tomorrow with Notch.
Plus I'm still waiting a reply on The Verge editorial, Lifelogger and Mophie.
Follow up calls will be a must tomorrow afternoon!

Perbetsky Jan. 30

I spoke with boss and he gave me some links and stories to look at. I am going to re-focus my story on fitness and health technology. I spoke to boss and he gave me some stories so I will start working on that. I also got in touch with the mimo company for Brittany and she hopefully will be receiving a call in the next few days from the cel and Founder of the company.

Ok, so I just found out that I need to do one story with small briefs on three different technologies for the disabled. So, I am definitely going to include Proloquo2go as the first technology. Hopefully, I will make some progress on the braille reading device. Finally, I will talk about a technology for the hearing impaired.

Hey Jordan Williams, check out this link if you want to work on writing about robots. At least one of these teams would probably talk to you.

Ward, Jan. 30

I've contacted the person in charge of media relations fro MCG (Denise Parrish). I was happy to finally reach her after countless calls and emails, only to find out she STILL isnt the person to be talking to. She gave me the phone number and email address of someone she thought would be helpful (Dr. Caroline DiBattisto). Hopefully I will hear back from Dr. DiBattisto soon, and by soon I mean tomorrow. I still will need 2 parents to interview. If this cant be anyone I know, who will I choose?

Trawick, Jan. 30

I haven't been able to make as much as progress as I've wanted to. My contact at Honda hasn't contacted me yet and I'm still narrowing down my topic and contacting different people.

Stewart, Jan. 30

OK, so far I have spoken with someone at The Verge and they are going working to get me someone to talk to about emerging technology.

Also, I have left messages with LifeLogger and sent and email. I've also contacted a company that does 3D printing with sugar, and tried another source for contact with CNET.

I just wanted to shoot out an update for today!

Day, Jan. 30

Things aren't going as smoothly as I would like, but I'm getting there.

I have one interview scheduled before our rough draft is due. I'll be talking with a programmer who works with the Oculus Rift on Sunday morning.

My second interview is in the process of being scheduled. It's with a professor at GRU who does not work with the Oculus Rift but works on other types of virtual reality. I'm not sure how helpful he'll be, but having a conversation with him definitely won't hurt.

After the due date, I have a interview scheduled with Kyle Johnsen who works at the Virtual Experiences Laboratory at UGA. He works with the Oculus Rift and is going to be giving me a demo of the product. The interview will be on the weekend after the rough draft is due.I'll hopefully talk with a couple other programmers who work there as well.

Other interviews are pending.

Perbetsky Jan. 30

Okay so I have not yet set up interviews because the information that I was given from the PR Department has nothing to do with consumer technology. With that being said, I spoke with Mindy the other day for a back up on tech in the health care system and I am going to focus on apps that promote good health. So I am going to contact some of the different app creators and get started on that ASAP. I am hoping that I will have some stuff accomplished by Feb. 4, but at this point I am not sure. I will come through though so no body worry about me! I will get this done. Although if anyone has an idea for a good app other then the ones Mindy and I talked about that would be great because I haven't really received any help from anyone other then Mindy and it would be nice to get other brains involved with helping me and my story.

Stewart, Jan. 28

I just got confirmation for an interview on Friday for the company Notch, which is a sensor that you can attach to your clothes at specific points to capture your body's movement data in 3D.

I've also reached out to LifeLogger, which is similar to Google glass but has a unique video format, allowing multi-tag search based on custom user defined tags and metadata generated by the built-in GPS, inertial system and compass, and I reached out to Mophie because they have a new case coming out to expand the memory of the iPhone. (While this may not seem like emerging, for the capability to expand memory through the charge port, which is where a Mophie case would attach, this is pretty amazing - also considering the fact that iPhones are infamous for "whatever memory you choose is what you get."

No luck on responses from the people from CNET, but I'm going to try to call again tomorrow in the morning to see if I can catch someone on the numbers I was given.

I'm still searching and reaching out, but I wanted to give an update since we had a snow day!

Barry, Jan. 27

I just spoke with Cathy Kingeter, vice president of marketing and communication at AssitiveWare, the company that created Proloquo2go.

She gave me some useful information about the app and about the traditional Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices.

AACs and Proloquo2go both give voices to those who cannot speak.

However, Proloquo2go is different from an AAC in that it is an app for your phone, so it is very portable. The app grows with the user based on their literacy and their vocabulary.

There is a new Proloquo app called Proloquo4Text which was released November 2013 and strictly targets older children and adults who are literate.

Kingeter said both of these apps have gotten great responses from the community, but she does not think they will every replace AACs completely. She said this is because users who cannot touch the device will still need an AAC that can be strapped on their wheelchair and accessed in other ways than touch.

Kingeter said Proloquo2go can replace AACs for those who can access it though. It is also a much cheaper alternative compared to an AAC, and it is more versatile.

I will be transcribing the interview tonight. This app may be the main focus of my article. Though it came out in 2009, most people probably don't know about it. Also, so far AssistiveWare has been more than willing to talk to me and help me out. Kingeter is contacting several parents of children who use Proloquo2go this afternoon, and she will let me know tomorrow if I can speak with one of them.

I do not know how I would focus on more than one technology without writing an essay, so I am really trying to narrow the scope. Perhaps I will briefly highlight other consumer technology for the disabled at the end of my story, or maybe include a sidebar about them.

Sunday, January 26, 2014

Barry, Jan. 26

I got an email back from Proloquo2go, and they are calling me tomorrow at 1 p.m.
For the braille reading app, they responded and gave me a number to call:
Judy Dixon the NLS Consumer Relations Officer at 202-707-0722

Day, Jan. 26

I'm in the process of scheduling a time to meet with Kyle Johnsen and a couple other programmers who work in the Virtual Experiences Laboratory at UGA. They work with the Oculus Rift and are willing to give me a demo of the product so I'm very excited. The interview should be sometime next weekend.

Oculus VR-
I have a couple of people I can interview but I'd like to find someone more official to talk with. I've attempted to contact Oculus VR a couple of times but have yet to receive a promising response. I've only seen a couple of interviews with them outside of expos so I think they keep things relatively quiet until they have something they'd like to announce. Anyway, if I can't get with anyone official, at least I'll be able to talk with a couple programmers who own the dev kit (early model of the Oculus Rift).

My biggest hope, as you've all heard, is to test this product. I've found a couple people in the Atlanta area but I haven't scheduled anything yet in hopes that I will find someone between Athens and Augusta.

I'm going to contact some of the professors that teach computer sciences, specifically the ones that teach programing, to see if they'll be able to help.

First of all, I would like to say a blanket THANK YOU to everyone who has posted links for me...I really appreciate all of the help!

This is my status update:  I have an interview set up at Best Buy Tuesday at noon as just a preliminary talk.  The guy's name is Ryan.  Megan are you still working on finding a specialist I can talk with?

I have a lot of browsing to do through all the links y'all shared as well as things that I've found.  I'll keep everyone posted on what I discover!

Perbetsky, Jan. 23

So far I was able to talk to Christen Carter and got a response fairly quickly and she cced a bunch of other people on the response she gave me and so I am looking into a couple of ideas.

I am looking into the e-books stuff and also the diabetic stuff that we spoke about in class. I do not have any interviews set up yet but I feel fairly confident about possibly finding something good for the technology in the health field story.

First let me start off by telling Jamie to check out The Pocket Drone on techcrunch.com. These guys would probably be easy to contact!

For my sources, I've reached out to CNET and I got one response that the woman in charge of media relations was on pregnancy leave, but she gave me some other contact information so I have emailed them, but I didn't get a phone number since it was just an automatic response.

I am also going down the vendor list from CES 2014 and going to try to reach out to them after class since I didn't have time before class today to do so.

Ward, Jan. 23

After being transfered from office to office, I was finally given the number to the office of a pediatrician at MCG (I know thats not what it's called anymore but dont know what to call it!) named Donna Moore. I have left her a voicemail on the office phone, because that is the only available option, and also a detailed email. I have emailed the companies that make the products I want to write about but haven't gotten a response. Currently looking for more sources

Smith, Jan. 23

Update before class:
I have spent much of the last two days doing research on my new topic. As far as coming up with interviews, I have not been in contact with anyone yet besides my live chat earlier today. I have looked up phone numbers for several different companies, but have not had much luck. Even though emails are not usually the best option, I have left several emails with businesses and have left a voice message with Electrolux. Hopefully I will hear back from someone soon.

Williams Jan. 23

I have attempted to set up interivews for my Business Empires article and I have had limited success. First I tried calling google, but could not get a human voice. Then I tried contacting Apple, and after jumping through hope I got the number for Coperate but they said it is company policy for them not to answer any questions or condut interviews that deal with the company. After that I reached out to HTC and go a number to their PR department. I called the PR deparatment and left a message after nobody answered. Although I stilll have a few more companies I can attempt to contact.

Smith, Jan. 23

Feeling a bit frustrated. I am currently trying to get in contact with sources for more information about new kitchen technology since my topic recently changed. I found some really interesting products from LG Appliances, such as a new Food Manager. This type of device allows a person to be able to keep track of how much food they have in their refrigerator and will be able to look on their phones when they are grocery shopping.
I went to LG's website for contact information and I saw a feature that included live chat. I decided to log on and see if there was anyone I could talk to. After about of minute of waiting, a was connected with a representative. I told him my name and about my article I'm working on. He was anything, but helpful to me.
He said that none of their new appliances would come out until April or May and that he could not give me any information about them until 2 weeks before their release date, which I find hard to believe since I have seen information on other websites.
After he refused to give any information about the new products, I asked if he could tell me about new products which were currently released and available to the public. All he said was for me to look on the website and to click on each individual product and read about them.
Thanks for your help LG representative, thanks.

Stewart, Jan. 21

I found two really interesting items for consumer electronics announced to come in this year's CES.

For health:

Sensoria Fitness Socks

Fitness trackers are big at CES this year with companies from all over the tech landscape announcing gadgets that count steps, measure heart rate or helps correct posture, just to name a few. The Sensoria Smart Socks stand out because they take tracking to the next level. They're made from fabric infused with textile sensors that send signals to a Bluetooth-enabled anklet. The socks not only track steps taken, but also cadence, foot landing technique, and weight distribution. For runners and fitness walkers, this can help correct potential problems and prevent injury while also assisting in training and reaching goals.
Price: $149 (one pair + anklet) $199 (four pairs + anklet)
Available: March, 2014

For technology for families:

Moneaul Baby Monitor

You can never start tracking activity too early, at least according to the company behind this new kind of baby monitor developed with hearing-impaired parents in mind. The monitoring station listens for a baby's cry and alerts parents via LEDs on the wristband as to what their child needs. Moneual claims that the monitor can differentiate between types of crying (hunger, sleepy, needs a change) and flashes specific patterns based on that determination. A corresponding app for iPhone and Android keeps track of all this data over time so parents can see when their baby cried, why, and for how long. It may seem impossible that a gadget can interpret what a child needs just from crying, but Moneual says the tech is based on data collected from thousands of crying babies — our condolences go out to the researchers who got that job.
Price: No price yet
Available: First quarter 2014

I am hoping to focus on technology for the blind and for the deaf. Specifically, I am interested in a device that allows the blind to "see" with their tongue. The technology has been in development for several years, but it is an important tool for the blind as it could promote more independence.

The latest story I have found on it so far was written in 2010. I will keep looking for something newer, but this story could provide some leads for sources.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/tongue-device-helps-blind-soldier-see-1921704.html

There is also a braille reader device that connects to smartphones so the blind can read messages on their screen. This story was published Jan. 3, 2014. It is a much more recent development and may be more applicable to this story.

Topic: car technology

I have contacted Alicia Jones, Manager of Honda & Acura Social Marketing about contacting different sources or ways to use social media sites like Twitter and Facebook to contact sources.

I've also started to create a list of stories about emerging car technology and use that to contact PR teams of the different publications.

I'm still having trouble with what direction I'm going in but that's what I'm narrowing down in the next couple of days.

Smith, Jan. 21

This is for Fatima's story. Hope this helps!

Ward Jan.21

I've called several local pediatricians in an effort to find out their opinions on new technology for babies  (such as the onesie that takes the baby's blood pressure, respiratory rate etc)  and have only spoken with receptionist's that take my information and say a doctor MAY call me back. I want to schedule interviews with parents to see how they feel about the technology emerging that would help them to monitor their children more closely (technology that would tell the parents how far their teenager has driven in the car, technology that would prevent texting and driving).

Stewart, Jan. 21

For sourcing, I found contact information from people at "HowStuffWorks."
They have a lot of information regarding new technologies and whether I could utilize them as a source or have them lead me to another source, I think it would be helpful.

Another source would be to contact Brian Bennett, the senior editor at cnet, because he writes a lot of stories regarding newer technologies coming to phones. Whether or not he would serve as the source or someone to lead me somewhere else would also have to come after contacting him.

Other than that, I am still searching and waiting on replies to see what I can gain from these two.

Smith, Jan. 21

Thanks to the help of Mindy, I feel like I might have a good start at getting the direction of my article. Instead of only focusing on new technologies found in the restaurant business, I am going to focus on the affect of technology with the experience of the consumer.
In today's society it seems that sometimes technology gets in the way of people's interaction with others. Often times I have noticed people at restaurants who go to eat with others, but spend most of their time interacting with their cell phones or other technology verses holding a conversation.
For my article, I want to explore new technology, such as ordering through an ipad, and getting others options on what they think about guests' interactions and if new technology would change it.
As for interviews, I know a few people who work in the restaurant business. I want to contact them and see if they would be willing to help me find people to interview. One of my friends works at Genghis Grill and I am going to contact her for sure. I think an interview with someone from Genghis Grill would definitely add to my story since they would have first-hand experience with new forms of technology and witnessing how others react to it.

This is where i think my direction for my story is at. Let me know what you guys think. I ties into what the overall section is so i think this might be the right path.

Trawick, Jan. 16

For Maggie's story: http://restaurantbriefing.com/2013/01/keeping-an-eye-on-tech-trends/

Barry 1/16/14

My story assignment is technology for the disabled. I am not sure about my direction just yet. I know more about technology for the hearing impaired than technology for other disabilities. Overall, I just want make people aware of all of the technology to help the disabled.

For contacts, I can contact MedEl for hearing impaired technology. I need to figure out sources for technology for the blind, though.

Stewart, Jan. 16

For my direction, I'm not 100 percent sure where I'm going to go. There are multiple areas of interest such as iris recognition being the next step in cell phones and new forms of wearable technology. For sources, I'm not sure who I am planning on contacting for a source yet.

I know I could branch out to employees with Samsung, but I would like to attempt to contact a designer if it is possible. I have also reasearched why iris recognition is suppose to be more popular than the facial recognition that is already available on phones.

I know I need to branch out further than phones, but I also want to keep it constrained so the story can flow well.

Trawick, Jan. 16

My topic for this special section is on the emergence of car technology.

As of right now, I can only think of one source to contact who might be of help. She's Alicia Jones, the the manager of Honda and Acura social marketing. I interviewed her in October for a story I wrote about The Big Mo through Honda and their Project Drive-In program.

As for direction, I'm not 100 percent sure how I'm going to write it. I'm going to do research this weekend and see what I can come up with.

Smith, Jan. 16

Direction:
As of now I am really not sure what direction to take for my article with restaurant technology. I had source information ideas about technology using ipads for ordering, but besides that I do not know what else to include in my article. I tried researching a couple different ideas; however, haven't been able to come up with much.
I tried looking up other types of new technology and the only other subject I could find was different types of apps people could download such as an app which tells the wait time of a restaurant.
There was also the idea of technology in kitchens of restaurants. There are new advances in this area; however, none of it seemed interesting enough to add to my article.
As of now I seem a little lost on which direction to take. I plan to continue my research and will hopefully find better ideas which will lead to more sources for my article.

Perbetsky, Jan. 16

I am still not sure about my direction for the health section. Due to not really knowing my direction, I have no sources as of now. If anyone has a direction or could help me out that would be great. Thank you.

Ward Jan.16

My topic is parents and kids. I'm thinking of moving this story in a "what technologies are emegring that will help parents keep their children safe" direction. i could talk about the video baby monitors for parents with newborns. I could also touch on the chip implants that would be useful for parents with young children that play outdoors etc. And I could talk about the newest technology that allows parents to put special equipment in a car to monitor how fast their teenagers have been driving. For sources I was considering talking to company representatives for these new products and maybe a parent that is currently using one of the listed products. Products include, but not limited to:The Summer Infant Baby Touch Digital Color Video Monitor and drive pulse. The chip implant is more like something that is still being talked about, but vital to this story because there are several pro's to the idea, and maybe a few cons in the eyes of some.

The topic education technology for K - 12 students venture off in many bifurcated ways. Some of these ventures include: cloud computing, electronic books, games/gamification, massive open online content (MOOCs), social networking, augmented reality and learning analytics. There are several different sources to pursue. Hopefully, the sources list include the following: Georgia Department of Education : Office of Technology Service, Richmond County Board of Education, Athens Banner:Tracey McManus and different magnet schools surrounding the local area in Augusta. The use of other technology experts will be used as well. That's all I have for now.

Williams Jan. 15

My story topic is Business Empires.

My direction is to figure out how these huge electric companies distinguish themselves and how they are competing against their competitors. Other topics I would like to hit on are how they treat their employees and if they have any employee benefits, what are the companies doing to improve the environment.

For sources I would like to start contacting top representatives of the company. Someone who knows the direction of the company and its future plans. I would also like to talk with employees to get their opinion on how their treated and their thoughts on the directions of the company they work for.

The companies I have thoughts on sourcing are Google, Verizon, Apple and Yahoo

Smith Jan. 14, 2014

I am so excited for my topic! For this section my topic is restaurant technology. For sources, I want to get information from restaurants who are already using this technology and restaurants who will be getting this technology.
Since Genghis Grill already has this type of technology at its establishment, I want to interview people who work at the restaurant to see what their take on the technology is. I think this interview will be credible to the story because it will hopefully show how these changes affect how employees and their job performance.
Another interview I would like to complete is someone who has been to this establishment. I want to know how their experience was. I think this is credible because it will show how technology might enhance or hurt a guest's experience at a restaurant with technology.
Other source ideas that I have would be to contact people from the restaurant Applebee's. I want to see if the company is getting new technologies for their restaurant and what made the company decide to make this change.
I think interviews from this company would be extremely credible because this is a huge chain restaurant which serves millions of people every year. However; I am not sure how available sources will be. In order to get credible sources, I think that I need to talk to someone who will know the most information about the new technology, which will most likely be someone not in a local branch. I am not sure who I will be able to contact to complete this interview or how available they will be to spend time talking to me.
